360Flex – Signing the Welcome banner

Since the very first 360|Flex, we’ve had a tradition. We hang a nice big banner somewhere everyone can see it. It’s up (usually) on Sunday, and hangs until Tuesday night, when it’s taken down and draped across a table for every attendee to sign.

This tradition, as most do, didn’t start as a tradition, but come the second 360|Flex, Tom and I thought, that the first one was really cool, and made a second one, then a third, forth, and so on.

It’s a cool thing to see every attendee walk by and pick up a sharpie and sign it. They write cool messages, inspirational things, etc. It’s great! Each event we hang the banners from the past so everyone can see, and it’s cool when we see people picking their messages out from past events.

You can’t sign the banner if you’re not there. Go register!

360Flex – Speaker Antonio Holguin

As the line between developer and designer gets thinner and people start not just crossing back and forth, but also working more closely, 360|Flex has been adding design related talks for the last 2 or so events. It’s cool to hear from designers about Flex, get their thoughts, and see how they’re using and interacting with Flex.

We’re really happy to have Antonio with us!

Q: How long have you been working with Flex?

A: First of all, I am a designer. (Don’t laugh. I can hear you laughing.) I primarily work with pretty pictures and stuff. ;) I just started getting into Flex about a year, maybe year and a half ago.

Awesome. We’ll have to update our speaker questions :) But it’s good to see designers taking a more active role in the Flex community. We’re happy to be a part of helping get this trend moving forward more!

Q: What do you like most about Flex?

A: It is easy enough for a designer to pick up, learn and run with.

That’s a huge benefit of Flex in general. Coming from any other language, Flex and ActionScript don’t present a huge learning curve or ramp up time. I came from ColdFusion and JavaScript, and picking up Flex/AS was cake.

Q: What 1 session are you most excited about seeing at 360|Flex DC?

A: I have to pick one? My session: Your AIR app is Boring, looks ok. Or my Mobile UX session looks like it might be almost kind of interesting.

I kid.
Seriously, I guess Garth’s Decrapping Your Flex App. Or Eric Fickes’ Screw HTML5, Make Cool Shit with AIR….
or the AIR Android Hands On with Jonathan Campos.
Oh, of course, Jesse vs. Jesse. That is gonna be hil-freakin’-larry-us.
Yeah picking just one is tough for everyone! Heck try being the guy who has to select topics. So many awesome topics and incredible speakers. I wish 360|Flex was a weak long event!
Q: What about 360|Flex DC are you most excited about?
A: “Excited” as in “happy excited?” Or “excited” as in “nervous-as-hell excited?”
Happy excited to finally meet a lot of the people that I only follow on Twitter and read their blogs.

Nervous excited, well….
You’ll do fine!! Of all the events I’ve been to, 360|Flex tends to be the most kind group of attendees, at least towards speakers… :D
Q: Do you prefer ninjas or robots?
A: Kitties.
Robot kitties? Or Ninja Kitties? Both can be lethal, and hate humans, much like their more plain counterparts.
Q: What is one thing you’d like to see improved in the Flex Framework?
A: There aren’t enough kitties.
Are you sure? We have some surprises planned for everyone… That’s why there’s a checkbox on registration “Kitty alergy?” I kid…. Or do i?
Q: Is there someone you’re hoping to see at 360|Flex DC?
A: uhm, everyone.

Duh.
Totally right answer! There’s no one at 360|Flex that isn’t worth knowing better!!
Q: Lastly, what would you tell someone who was on the fence or hadn’t heard (I know, they’re out there though) of 360|Flex to get them to come?
A: WTF is wrong with you? Not coming? Be there, but you can sleep in on Tuesday morning. Its ok. I won’t be mad. Just be there.

Or my kitties will come after you.
My kitties are trained assassins.
So then it’s ninja kitties.
Don’t miss out on trained ninja assassin kitties, and Antonio’s double whammy two session line up at 360|Flex. Register now!

360Flex – Speaker Jun Heider

Jun is not just a kick ass developer, he’s also a great musician!

When you attend 360|Flex DC not only will you have three chances to see jun present (“Large scale apps using RTMFP & Flash Platform” & “Advanced RTMFP” as well as a tech session at lunch on Tuesday about musicians using technology) but you’ll also get to see him perform Monday night at 360|Flex-a-palooza!!

Q: How long have you been working with Flex?

A: I’ve been working regularly with Flex a little over four years now.

It’s amazing how far we’ve come how fast!

Q: What do you like most about Flex?

A: Flex was a way for me to get into building Flash applications without having to learn the timeline and all the designery aspects of Flash.  Not that I didn’t want to, I’m just a coder vs. a designer and Flex makes much more sense to me.

Ha! ditto. I tried my hand at Flash and never could get the timeline and library! Flex was my way to build awesome apps and user experiences beyond HTML/CF.

Q: What 1 session are you most excited about seeing at 360|Flex DC?

A: 250-Michael Labriola-Flex 4 Components from the Firehose

Mike always delivers! His sessions are routinely highly rated, and the room is packed! We’ve watched people leave with a glazed over look in their eyes, minds blown.

Q: What about 360|Flex DC are you most excited about?

A: Hanging with all the cool peeps in the Flex community, chillin’ in DC, and all the rockin’ Flex knowledge that’ll be at the conference.

All good reasons! I know I’m looking forward to the exact same things!! I can’t wait!

Q: Do you prefer ninjas or robots?

A: Since I’m descended from a Samurai clan, I would have to say I prefer robots…unless of course it’s a ninja robot.

Robot Ninjas are banned by international treaty i believe.

Q: What is one thing you’d like to see improved in the Flex Framework?

A: I would say my gripe is with the Builder more than the framework.  It’s gotten slow and memory intensive over the last year and not only that it seems Adobe is spending way too much time building n00b features into the IDE vs. improving/enhancing the developer productivity tools that an experienced Flex developer would care about.

Yeah they did that with Dreamweaver too, early on. Form builders, and CRUD tools, etc. They spend a lot of time making these widgets that sound cool and look great at User Group meetings, but don’t really help anyone, LOL.

Q: Is there someone you’re hoping to see at 360|Flex DC?

A: Indiana Jones

Well you might just be surprised, probably not, but you never know. Though I wouldn’t get my hopes up :)

Q: Lastly, what would you tell someone who was on the fence or hadn’t heard (I know, they’re out there though) of 360|Flex to get them to come?

A: If you’re a Flex developer and you can afford to come to 360 but you don’t…then you suck and you will be forever banished to building Flex 1.5 applications using the pre-eclipse version of Flex Builder.

I don’t think I could have said it better myself, but shoot, even if you can’t afford to come, we’ve got two great ways to come for damn near free. You can Volunteer, or enter our unemployed contest.

Or just register here!
