360Flex – The Speakers -Zohar Babin

Tom and I met Zohar in Italy at 360|Flex Europe, he’s a great guy, we’re really excited to have him speaking at 360|Flex San Jose 2010!

While working on some conference stuff once night the three of us were chatting on Skype.

Tom: Whatup Playa?

Zohar: Hey guys!

Me: Excited to come to CA for 360|Flex? It’s been a while since we saw you last, Italy right?

Zohar: Yeah, Italy was fun, can’t wait to see how the US version is

Tom: Oh it’s WAY different. Italy was fun, San Jose will Blow yo’ Mind!

Me: Oh yeah. So what do you think people who attend your session will be most surprised by/about?

Zohar: How much you can do with online video, for so little work and efforts!
Tom: Definitely, Kaltura is awesome, I dig it.
What session are you most excited about, besides your own of course :)
Zohar:
  • Michael Labriola – Apocalypse Soon? The remaking of ‘Flex Components’
  • Panel – discuss the flash platform’s relevance in 5 years.
  • Dave Hassoun / Jun Heider – Adobe Stratus and Flash Player 10 P2P: Enterprise Multi-user Applications Without the Need for Large Server Infrastructure
  • Panel – Why Business should be Your Business, how to speak to executives
  • Huyen Tue Dao – Greenthreading in Flex
Me: Those are gonna be kick ass sessions! The Flash platform in 5 years panel might be swapped out, we’re not sure yet, but if it is, the other Panel will be awesome!

So, what are you most looking forward to at 360|Flex San Jose?
Zohar: The people! The vibe!
Tom: you know it! We think the vibe at 360|Flex is unmatched at any other event.
What would you tell someone that was on the fence about attending 360|Flex, to convince them to come?
(it takes Zohar a long time to answer, actually this picks up almost a week later. Turns out he was fell asleep at his keyboard, from working too hard and too long on Kaltura)
Zohar: Sorry about the other day, what was the question?
Me: LOL No worries! What would you tell someone that was on the fence about attending 360|Flex, to convince them to come?
Zohar: Best conference spirit, awesome people, amazing sessions and best of all – fun! –sign up now! and use my link ;-)
Tom: The sessions are awesome, we love it when people come out of a session, literally shell shocked. Their minds completely blown by the knowledge that just got dropped on them.
Me: So Zohar, being not from America… who would win in a fight? Sylvestor Stallone or John Wayne? I’ve always wondered what folks from outside the US thought.
Zohar: Duh, John Wayne!
Don’t miss hearing Zohar talk about web video and Kaltura, and awesome video platform using Flex. Register Now!! don’t miss the awesome!

360Flex Speakers: In it for the Love, not the Money

It just dawned on me. We’re highlighting the speakers for the upcoming 360|Flex in March while also republishing interviews from past shows. You know all these speakers for their superior Flex skills. It’s the primary reason that many of you come to the show. We understand, it’s why we pick them and have the show! So we’re on the same page. :)

However, there’s a bunch of stuff that goes on behind the scenes that you as attendees never see. Our speakers are not just passionate about Flex, ActionScript, Mobile and RIAs. They’re also passionate about 360|Flex itself. They feel an ownership to the show and rightfully so. While John and I play host, it is these people that are standing in front of people and laying out the goods.

Recently, some of the procedures around speaking were changed. John and I, as we always do, were looking for areas to improve. A lot of times, we take a logical approach and make modifications to achieve concrete results. Often times, these modifications are in response to direct requests from attendees.

While making logical modifications over the past three years has worked well for us, it didn’t in this particular instance. Some understood the changes and were in agreement. Others saw it as an attack on the very core vibe that makes 360|Flex the great show that it is. John and I were surprised by this but we did what we always do: open the floor for discussion.

As a business owner, nothing feels better than knowing people like your product enough to pay their hard earned money for it. It’s something that has happened well over 2000 times. However, every time we get an email alerting us money has changed us, it reminds us of that honor to serve you.

The epitome of business though is when your product/brand ceases to be just yours and is owned by the community it supports. You always hope people care about it more than with just the money. You always hope they love it as much as you do and care about it on personal level.

Our speakers care about 360|Flex for more than their fame and fortune. Let’s face it, a lot of them are famous enough without us. And we’ll be honest, while a free ticket and hotel room are nice, no speaker will be retiring from those paid benefits. To quote one speaker, “It’s an honor to speak at 360|Flex.”

I’m positive I speak for both myself and John when I say, “No, it’s our honor to have you all as speakers.” Now, you attendees, know a little bit more about the inner-workings of 360|Flex and why this show is as great as it is. If you haven’t registered yet, go here and do it. Then when you catch an awesome session or have a great discussion with a speaker in the hallway, take a moment and thank them for their time and effort. They are there for you attendees, not for me and John. Let them know you appreciate it.

360Flex – The Speakers – Dan Florio (Polygeek)

Tom and I were sitting at an In-N-Out a few days ago, and what do you think rolled up but the mobile PolyGeek compound! He was rolling thru on his way from one state to the next on his never ending trek around the country.

Dan: Hey guys! How ya doin?

Tom: mmmfffphlp mmf dinnuf

Me: Thanks Chewie… We’re good dude, how are you!?

(We shake hands, then Dan heads in to place his order)

(A few minutes later he comes out with a tray laden with a Double Double Animal Style, Fries Well Done and a Neapolitan milkshake. We waved him to sit with us)

Tom: So polygeek, we’ve known you a while now, you were at the first 360|Flex right?

Dan: Yup, I was at the very first 360Flex conference. This will be my 4th 360|Flex conference.

Me: Hard core! You rock man, we appreciate the support. You’re presenting on Runpee in San Jose, what do you think people who attend your session will be most surprised by/about?

Dan: Just how many details go on under the hood of something as simple as RunPee.com
Tom: Yeah I bet.
(Tom picks up his Double Double Protein style, oozing secret sauce… pssst it’s Thousand Island)
What session are you most excited about, besides your own of course :)
Dan: Is Deepa giving a presentation? If so then whatever she is talking about.

Me: Nice! Doesn’t matter what she’s presenting on, she is by the way, it’s simply known that it’ll kick ass. Which is true.
(I take a bite of my animal style fries)
What are you most looking forward to at 360|Flex San Jose?
Dan: (Chewing a bite of burger as fast as he can, then coughing so hard I worry he might die right there at the table) Hanging with geeks like me.
(Tom and I nod)
Tom: Damn skippy (tom’s a little bit Gangsta, I’m a little bit Country), we love the geek out factor at 360|Flex.
Me: Yeah I don’t care about what’s next for PDF, but it’s awesome to hear some of the conversations that take place over beers.
What would you tell someone that was on the fence about attending 360|Flex, to convince them to come?
Dan: (His shake makes that weird almost gone noise that shakes make, like an elephant with a sinus problem) 360|Flex conferences are like the Grateful Dead concerts. Once you’ve been to one you just want to go to all of them. Great speakers and great conversations with attendees.
(Tom and I look at each other)
Both of us: Dead head bears on the sticker!!!!
(We stand up to dump our trays, time to get back to work)
Me: Oh hey, Who’d win? Vehicle or Lion Voltron?
Dan: (Puts his burger down, and get’s a very serious deep thought look on his face) Vehicle Voltron. Upgrades are always better, right?
Me: Can’t argue with that. Wonder if any of the cars had turbos?
We wave good bye and let Dan finish his meal. As we walk by his winnie, we see a 360|Flex Seattle sticker on the back bumper.
Dan’s right, once you’ve attended 360|Flex, any other conference professing to have Flex content will just feel inadequate. You’ll be tainted for life, but really, is that a bad thing? Once you’ve had the best, why waste time with others :) Register now, don’t miss out! There’s really no better place to get your fill of Flex/AIR and ActionScript knowledge.
