360Stack 2013 – Hands on with Arduino

arduino_logoLike playing around with soldering irons? Like making LEDs light up? Like making those LEDs light up over the web, using JavaScript? Our pal Justin Mclean is offering is popular Arduino hands on session again this year. Last year it was a half day crash course in Ardiuno and Flex/AIR. This year it’s a full day, deep dive hooking arduino boards up to web stack technologies.

It’s a separate registration ($150) which covers the cost of the equipment (which you keep).

Last year the class sold out, we don’t recommend waiting around until the last minute to grab a spot. Register now!

360Stack 2013 – The Schedule… Announced

In case you missed it, we’ve announced the line up for 360|Stack 2013.

I’m really proud of the line up we’ve got this year. Coming out of 2012, having announced the name change and change of focus of the conference I was more than a little worried. Would we get any submissions was my first worry. We got nearly 100 incredible submissions ranging from iOS for the Flex dev, arduino, HTML/JS, Flex, and more. I don’t think there was a JS library that wasn’t presented in the submissions.

The next worry was would anyone care about the event? That certainly seems to be also for not, tickets are selling, people are talking about the conference etc. That makes me happy ;) You can see from the line up that the community around 360|Stack is as awesome as ever. It’s truly a great showing of community experts sharing what they know, what they’ve learned (almost always the hard way!), and what they’re passionate about; whether it’s succeeding as a business, or a new library to make developing easier.

But you’re here for the line up. It’s been tweeted a lot, but here’s the official announcement of the 2013 360|Stack line up and schedule.

This is schedule v.1, we’ll be moving things around as we play with what sessions make sense before after and during others. We want to make sure that sessions can benefit from other sessions, so that someone with a specific interest can really get the most out of the conference. We’ll be working with speakers and sponsors and making changes as we go, so keep an eye on the schedule page. Don’t worry, we’ll tweet about changes as they come too :)

360stack – Great Advice on Attending Conferences

I came across this post on one of my favorite blogs, and wanted to share it because well… I say it a lot about the conference and why and how to make it the best possible experience for attendees, but this post really does a good job. I’ve pasted the key points below, with my thoughts.

1. Plan your arrival and departure times accordingly.

The last impression you want people to have of you is that you are a person who is late, disorganized, and disoriented. Arrive on the early end, get some rest, and be ready to meet with other early-arrival attendees.

360: This also allows you time to decompress, meet other early or late departers in a less frenetic setting where folks aren’t hurrying off to a session. There’s also a straggler’s dinner (dutch treat) on Wednesday night. Very informal, but gives folks a chance to grab one last meal with each other and hang out just a little longer. Who knows, you could meet one or two more new people.

2. Look for a buddy or mentorship program.

Many conferences will offer introductions for newcomers. If this is your first time attending a particular conference, reach out to the organizers and see if they can match you up with someone who can help you make new connections at the event.

360: This is something we’ve not done super well at in the past. We definitely do our best to introduce people to each other, etc, but would love to be even more facilitating on that front. After all the reason we created the 360|Events was to help folks meet other folks, and learn awesome things. Don’t hesitate to email us.

3. Remember, this is a business trip, not a personal trip.

While you may be used to staying in a five-star hotel or booking a bargain accommodation, be sure to stick with the conference-chosen location. There is nothing worse for networking than commuting to a hotel with no other attendees around. And the same goes for transportation — I would much rather interact with other attendees on a free shuttle than ride solo in a fancy limo.

However, that doesn’t mean you have to reserve a room through the conference. Sometimes the conference has negotiated a low rate with the hotel, but I always try to book cheaper. Google the hotel name with the term “promo codes,” or find packages offered through airlines to find a better rate.

360: Funny how many people do treat conferences as personal trips. While we encourage folks to spend as much time together, we do allow Significant others into the parties, because we know some folks do travel with the family and we don’t want them to feel like they’re not welcome. The bit about the hotel, SPOT ON. Yeah there’s places that are cheeper, but when you’re driving to your cheaper hotel, everyone else is in the venue bar, hanging out.

4. Make all your reservations as early as possible.

Conferences tend to bring a lot of people with similar interests to the same city, so book your dinner, travel, entertainment, and other activities as early as possible.

360: Yeah, like really, go book your hotel room now, even if you haven’t bought your ticket. Hotel rooms can be canceled up to 24 hours before your reservation, with no penalty. It makes us really really sad when we get the email from someone who bought their ticket 2 weeks before the conference and there’s no rooms at the hotel. It fills up. book early.

5. Pack the right essentials.

Packing can be a true challenge, but with the right essentials, you can save valuable time. Bring comfortable yet professional attire, and be sure to pack shoes that won’t ruin your trip. Wrinkle releaser has been a lifesaver for me during out-of-town trips.

360: Ok, you can skip the “professional” attire if you want. 360|Stack is really informal. We care more about the awesome content in the sessions and the awesome sponsors in the foyer, than we do about “dress to impress” but really, dress in whatever you’re most comfortable.

I know, pretty obvious, but every year someone does the exact opposite of at least one or two of these guidelines.

360Stack 2013 – Call For Papers Closing

Been sitting on an idea? Thinking, “you know I should make time to submit that to 360|Stack…” Well time’s almost up! GET ON IT!

The Call For Papers closes tomorrow at noon. Not noon Pacific, or noon Hawaii. Noon mountain time.

Working on some cool hardware hack? Having fun learning a new .js library? Trying something new as a side project? Been contributing a lot to the Apache Flex project?

All of those are things that would be awesome at 360|Stack. 360|Stack 2013 isn’t about just one thing, it’s about the cool shit people are making.

So get off the fence, off your duff, etc, etc. and submit a topic or two.

If not, well, better buy a ticket before they’re gone. Register now!

360Stack 2013 – What do you want to see?

There’s a ton of cool shit in the web stack space! More JS frameworks than you can count. Awesome tools like Brackets, and the jetbrains suite, and way more than I can list.

We’ve got some awesome submissions for 360|Stack 2013, but I’m curious, what do you want to see? What’s hot on your radar this year? What can we push people to submit topics on?

I’ll update this post we comments come in so folks will be able to see the results easier.

Leave a comment, what absolutely has to be at 360|Stack 2013?

360Stack 2013 – attracting the awesome

360|Stack 2013 is a long ways away… Ok not that long really, I mean the Call For Papers is open, and will be closing the end of February after all.

Why’d we start so soon? Well we’re basically starting something new… again.

Luckily this time we’ve got an awesome community around us but 360|Stack is still a new venture. So why not start early?

Our plan with 360|Stack is that it blows all previous 360|Flex’s out of the water! Both in terms of technical content, and community.

During the recent 360|MIN event we talked to attendees about what 360|Stack was supposed to be and the over arching thing is that 360|Stack, WON’T be Just another HTML5/JS event. It’s also not going to be one of those events that touches a little bit on lots of technologies but doesn’t really deliver anything of use.

360|Stack will focus on bleeding edge stuff in the HTML5/JS world as well as the Apache Flex world and native app development space. Whether that’s new tools from Adobe, the latest release from the Apache Flex team, or something new someone is building with the web stack (Such as Sencha Architect, or Montage), that’s what we want to talk about. There’s lots of JS events where you can get the latest on this framework or architecture, etc. That’s not what we’ll be talking about.

See you in August! Get your ticket now, while there’s some left!

360MIN 2012 session videos

Get ‘em while they’re hot!

You can watch Renaun Erickson talk about the possibilities of AAA games on the web (dressed as a unicorn) right now for free here. but if you want to download all 12 videos in HD you can get them here for just $10. We decided to try a super low cost bundle as part of our ongoing experiment around 360|MIN. so enjoy about 6 hours of content from some of the smartest people we know for just ten bucks.

We think you’ll enjoy the sessions, there’s lots of great content and discussion.

360MIN 2012 is a wrap

If you missed 360|MIN 2012, that’s a bummer. it was a great time if I do say so myself :)

We had a great group of people both attending and speaking and the discussions and interaction were awesome! 360|MIN was an experiment and it paid off in every way we hoped!

Thank you very much to our awesome speakers. To Adobe and Omega Ortega for hooking us up with lunch and the reception.

I’m thinking we’ll have at least 2 360|MIN a year as smaller more conversation focused events in addition to 360|Stack (tickets are on sale BTW, don’t miss out). 360|STack is our flagship, 4 tracks, hands on training, 300+ people. 360|MIN is going to be our fun experimental, conversation focused event. No hands on training. Single track, lots of room for interaction and collaboration.

I’m really excited to start planning the next 360|MIN, as well as start locking down more details for 360|Stack (Oh also BTW, the Call For Papers is open)

So if you missed out, were sitting on the fence etc. When the time comes for 360|MIN 2013 I wouldn’t dilly dally. Space is and will be limited so waiting around just means you’ll be watching the tweets and regretting it… just sayin’ :)

See you soon

360Stack 2013 – Call For Papers is now open

Well hello there! It’s that time again! Actually it’s a bit early, but still.

We decided to open the CFP now to give everyone time to come up with something SUPER AWESOME. Not just plain old everyday awesome, that’s old hat, we want SUPER AWESOME. We want stuff you haven’t even thought of YET.

For the inaugural 360|Stack, we want to encourage topics around Apache Flex, Web stack (HTML/JS), and Mobile (AIR or Native). As always there’s Development, Design and Business for Track break downs.

Also we want to encourage you to tell friends, colleagues, anyone else you think should submit, to submit. We select topics blind based on title and description in order to make sure the cream of the crop is selected, and as little bias as possible creeps in.

Ok, that said, go submit! Remember you can submit as many topics as you like. The CFP will close Mid February 2013.

360Stack 2013 – Locked and Loaded

I was trying to think of  some other clever terms that fit the title of this post, but couldn’t so…

August 4-7, Denver CO. 360|Stack 2013… AKA 360|Stack 1. All the same awesome you’ve come to expect from us with 360|Flex, but with a less restrictive name.

We still love Flex, and can’t wait to see the awesome things the Apache Flex team brings to the table, but the future ain’t written in stone, and there’s LOTS of technology out there, and 360|Flex was always more about awesome people building awesome things.

If you’re building things in HTML5/JS technologies or Flex/AIR for web or mobile, we want you not just to attend, but to present. 360|Stack is a celebration of building things.

Much more to come, but we wanted your to know the dates so you could start planning. We’ll have the hotel booking link up shortly.

See you there!
